Food Philosophy and Approach
At Solothurn Wellness Retreat, our food approach is an important part of the holistic and healing environment we offer. Our focus is on providing nourishing foods to help you heal and repair as well as re-shape your relationship with food as you journey towards health and wellness during your stay with us.
We have chosen the traditional Mediterranean style diet as the core of our food approach due to the scientific research supporting its health benefits and the associated lifestyle aspects of social connection and enjoying food with family and friends.
A typical Mediterranean diet includes lots of vegetables, fruits, legumes/beans, healthy fats like olive oil, nuts and seeds, and whole grains, for example whole grain bread, oats and brown rice. It also contains moderate amounts of fish, white meat and dairy produce, and smaller amounts of red meat. The research shows that it is the combination of all these foods that bring health benefits such as protecting against the development of heart disease, depression, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cognitive conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s. Researchers have also found that people who follow a Mediterranean diet may live a longer life and be less likely to put on weight. According to the Harvard School of Public Health,”Together with regular physical activity and not smoking, our analyses suggests that over 80% of coronary heart disease, 70% of stroke, and 90% of type 2 diabetes can be avoided by healthy food choices that are consistent with the traditional Mediterranean diet.” With this in mind, our chef uses fresh, local, seasonal whole and unprocessed foods, including organic produce where possible to serve nutritious and delicious meals, all prepared on-site. Meals are designed with optimum nutrition in mind and ensure you receive an ideal balance of macro and micronutrients across each day.
Our head chef and team of cooks work closely with our clinical nutritionist to design our seasonal menus and we are responsive to special dietary requirements such as gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets wherever possible.
