Overcoming Anxiety

Understanding Anxiety

The twentieth century has often been referred to as the “age of anxiety”. Research conducted over the past thirty years shows that anxiety is widespread inour modern society and that it is continuing to increase at an alarming rate. According to Beyond Blue, it is now the most common mental health issue in Australia with an average of one in four people experiencing the sometimes crippling effects of anxiety at some stage in their lives.

Anxiety is a general term that describes a range of experiences from feeling nervous and worried to debilitating panic attacks or anxious feelings that don’t seem to go away. Outwardly the symptoms of anxiety may not be all that obvious but people experiencing anxiety often experience physiological symptoms such as a racing heart, tightening of the chest muscles, rapid breathing or excessive sweating and perhaps shaking. These physical characteristics of anxiety often lead to behaviours aimed at avoiding situations that might potentially trigger the anxiety. This can then have a huge impact on work and social life and further exacerbate the problem.

Other common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Excessive fear or worry
  • Feeling tense, wound up or edgy
  • Panic attacks
  • Catastrophising or obsessive thinking
  • Insomnia and other sleeping difficulties
  • Digestive problems
  • Physical aches and pains

What Causes Anxiety?

At Solothurn Wellness Retreat, we believe that one of the major causes of anxiety is our minds habitually thinking in a particular way. From our experiences throughout life we may have been taught to think and believe in frequently unhelpful, inaccurate and limited ways that contribute to stress and can lead us into the state of anxiety. For example, if you frequently think that you must have everything under control in order to feel ok, then you may find yourself experiencing anxiety any time you find that things are not going to plan.
