Overcoming Depression

Understanding Depression

Depression is one of the most common of all mental health problems which the World Health Organisation reports currently affects one in every four adults to some degree. Though depression is certainly not a new phenomenon, research is showing that it is on the rise despite our increasing material wealth as a society.

The word ‘depression’ is a general term to describe a range of experiences from a slightly noticeable and temporary decrease in mood to a profoundly impairing and even life threatening state, with suicide now the leading cause of death for men under 45 and women under 35 in Australia (Source: BeyondBlue). Depression can manifest in a variety of ways depending on the individual but it is often experienced as:

  • feeling emotionally ‘down’
  • low in energy
  • inability to concentrate
  • accelerated, negative thought patterns
  • excessive worry
  • lack of motivation for life
  • withdrawal from friends and family
  • changes in appetite
  • insomnia or oversleeping
  • physical ailments, aches/pains
